The Sands Wine Labels

Design Inspired by the Sand and Sea

The Sands Wine Labels, designed by Giovanni Murgia, draw inspiration from the movement of sand and the erasing effect of the sea. The goal was to represent these characteristics in a graphic and elegant way.

The uniqueness of these labels lies in their connection to the wines themselves. The vines grow on the sea sand, just a short distance from the coast. To capture this essence, an embossing technique was used to recreate the patterns found in Zen gardens. The labels are divided into two sections: a natural paper for embossing on top, and a metallic paper that adds color and personality to the design. When the three labels are put together, they form a cohesive and unique design, with the colored element acting as a link between them.

For the realization of these labels, a fine natural paper texture was used on the top section, providing a warm and pleasant touch. The dry relief created on this label resembles the patterns found in sand. A colored metal foil adds identity and personality to each label. The bottom section utilizes metallized paper, which is then colored with a pantone color matched to the foil. The personalized capsule completes the packaging design project, tying it all together.

The dimensions of the labels are 83x130 mm, divided into two sections with different papers. The design not only appeals visually but also engages the sense of touch. The embossing and natural texture of the paper create a tactile effect when the bottle is held. The labels also join together seamlessly, forming a single drawing on the sand when placed side by side.

The Sands Wine Labels project started in January 2018 and was completed in May 2017 in Sassari, Italy. Extensive research was conducted to ensure the design accurately represented the values of the winery, its history, and the territory in which the wines are produced. The labels underwent qualitative and quantitative testing, with positive results on the perception of wine quality and the choice of label design.

The creative challenge was to create a modern and minimal design that conveyed the unique characteristics of the winery and its territory. Elements of continuity with the old labels were sought, while still creating a completely new and minimalist design. The tactile three-dimensional sand designs and the distinct color of each label give them style and identity. The soft and sinuous lines of the label evoke the sea and the sand of Sardinia.

The Sands Wine Labels have been recognized for their excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The labels are respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.
